HARTFORD, Conn. — Oscar-winning actor and longtime Connecticut resident Paul Newman has joined fellow actor Katharine Hepburn, humorist Mark Twain and baseball great Jackie Robinson in the Connecticut Hall of Fame.

Newman was inducted posthumously yesterday at the state Capitol, where the longtime Westport resident was remembered for his acting career and philanthropic works.

Newman, who died in September at age 83, set up camps for severely ill children and launched his Newman's Own foods line in 1983 on a lark — a venture that, to date, has raised $265 million for charities worldwide.

LEIGH SCORES ROLE ON 'WEEDS'

LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Jason Leigh will be lighting up "Weeds" next season.

Showtime says the 47-year-old actress will appear on the fifth season of the hit dramedy, which premieres June 8 on Showtime. Leigh will appear in "at least two episodes" as the older sister of Mary-Louise Parker's character.

Leigh's film credits include "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Single White Female" and "Margot at the Wedding."

ALLEGED PEEPER NABBED AT SPEARS' HOME

CALABASAS, Calif. — Authorities have arrested a camouflage-wearing, camera-toting woman they say was caught peeking into Britney Spears' windows.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested Miranda Tozier-Robbins yesterday morning after security guards stopped her at Spears' suburban Calabasas home. Deputies say the 26-year-old was issued a citation for trespassing and disorderly conduct and released.

A sheriff's spokesman said it was unclear what the woman was up to. Jail records did not indicate whether Tozier-Robbins has an attorney.

ISRAELI CONDUCTOR WOWS CROWD IN CAIRO

CAIRO — Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim stirred a sold-out Cairo Opera House yesterday with a performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, drawing ovations in his first visit to Egypt.

The famed musician's enthusiastic welcome in a major Arab capital reflected his years of advocacy for peace with the Palestinians and Arab world and his efforts to use music to bring people together in a region where conflict otherwise keeps them apart.

Egyptian film star Omar Sharif introduced Barenboim before the concert.

"He is a man who cultivates tolerance," Sharif said, as the crowd filled with Egyptian high society and foreign diplomats cheered.

Barenboim began the concert with several piano solos and later conducted the Cairo Symphony Orchestra.

He is believed to be the first prominent Israeli musician to perform in Cairo.
