LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky forward Patrick Patterson will test the NBA waters but will not hire an agent.

The 6-foot-9 sophomore said Wednesday he wants to get a feel for his draft status before making a decision. By not signing with an agent, Patterson could return to Kentucky. The draft is June 25.

Patterson averaged 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds and was named to the All-SEC first team. New Kentucky coach John Calipari said he believes Patterson would benefit from another year in school but encouraged him to go through the process.

"I feel mentally that I am prepared and I am ready," Patterson said.

Patterson admitted the thought of returning next year to what could be a totally revamped team is appealing, but felt he owed it to himself to check on his pro prospects.

"I'm doing this for myself and my best interests," he said. "I'm doing this for my family and we'll see how it plays out."

Patterson is the second Kentucky player to submit his name for the draft. Guard Jodie Meeks also plans to gauge his NBA prospects but has not hired an agent.

Meeks said Thursday he has no timetable for making a decision on whether to stay or go. Players have until June 15 to remove their name from the draft.

Calipari believes both players could thrive in his dribble-drive offense but that he'll respect whichever road they choose.

"If those two choose to go now, I'll be all for them," Calipari said. "I'll be disappointed that I didn't get to coach them, but none of us should be mad."
