CBKB: Ex-UCLA, UAB coach Gene Bartow undergoing cancer treatment

Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Former UCLA and UAB basketball coach Gene Bartow has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

A UAB spokesman said Wednesday that the 78-year-old Bartow is scheduled to begin outpatient treatment at the Kirklin Clinic in Birmingham next week.

Bartow replaced John Wooden as UCLA's coach in 1976 and led the Bruins to the Final Four. He left after two seasons to start UAB's program. He is now serving as president of the company that owns the Memphis Grizzlies.

Bartow is set for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in November.

Bartow spent 13 seasons with the Blazers and was also the university's longtime athletic director. He led the program to the Final Four in 1982.
