NHL: Craig MacTavish out as Edmonton Oilers coach

EDMONTON, Alberta — Craig MacTavish is out as coach of the Edmonton Oilers after they failed to make the playoffs for the third straight year.
General manager Steve Tambellini said Wednesday he and MacTavish agreed it was time for a change behind the bench. MacTavish this week noted his inability to get the most from a team he predicted would be a contender.
The Oilers finished 11th in the Western Conference with a record of 38-35-9 for 85 points. This was the fifth time in seven seasons they have not reached the playoffs. In 2006, however, the Oilers made it to the Stanley Cup finals, losing in seven games to Carolina.
