HPU cheer team prevails

Hawai'i Pacific's large co-ed cheer team won its seventh consecutive Division II title this weekend at the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Association Championships at Daytona Beach, Fla.
The HPU all-girls and dance squads also won Division II national titles. It was the dance team's fourth straight title and fifth in six years.
University of Hawai'i's Kristin Kowalkowski and Kelvin Lam won the partner stunt championship.
HPU group stunt teams also captured first and second place.
TENNIS
BYUH WOMEN WIN
Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 5-2, yesterday in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the Holua Resort of Mauna Loa Village in Kailua, Kona.
Yuan Ji, who teamed with Elwin Li to win at No. 1 doubles before winning her No. 2 singles match, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Host Hawai'i-Hilo, led by tournament Sportsman Award winner Christie Pagatpatan, beat Chaminade, 5-1, in the third-place match.
Grand Canyon beat Academy of Art, 5-2, for fifth and Dixie State beat Notre Dame de Namur, 5-0, for seventh.
SOFTBALL
UH SWEEPS USU
Amanda Tauali'i hit a two-run homer and Stephanie Ricketts pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as Hawai'i beat Utah State, 3-2, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine improved to 20-20 overall and 8-4 in the WAC. The Aggies are 13-9 and 6-4.
In the opener, Stacey Yamada singled with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to win it for UH, 4-3.
Ricketts pitched the final six innings, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out five.
SURFING
ISLE SURFERS OUSTED
Hawai'i surfers Melanie Bartels, Alana Blanchard and Coco Ho were eliminated in the early rounds of the Rip Curl Women's Pro.
The contest was completed yesterday in 2- to 4-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.
Bartels was eliminated in the second round.
Blanchard and Ho lost in the third round.
