If your kids' eyes glaze over at the thought of going to a poetry reading, introduce them to slam poetry today at the Hawai'i State Art Museum's Second Saturday event.

The whole family can work with Kealoha, left, founder of Hawai'iSlam, Youth Speaks Hawai'i and First Thursdays, who will be teaching the elements of slam poetry and helping participants play tangible games, write full pieces and perform their work.

Prefer the visual arts? You can try your hand at printmaking, wire sculpture and watercolor with ArtMania, a program put together by a group of graduate students from the University of Hawai'i art department.

The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and if all the creative expression makes you hungry, Downtown @ the HiSAM will be open for lunch.
