BYUH women No. 1 in DII tennis

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young-Hawai'i moved up as far as it could — one spot to No. 1 — in the latest Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II women's rankings. Meanwhile, Hawai'i Pacific is one of 15 DII schools that have men's and women's teams in the Top 25.

The HPU men jumped up a spot to No. 5 in the ranking, which was finalized yesterday. Armstrong Atlantic, which beat the Sea Warriors last week in Savannah, Ga., regained the top spot. HPU also fell to fourth-ranked Valdosta State on that trip, but upset then-No. 4 Georgia State & College, which ended Armstrong Atlantic's 38-match win streak earlier this season.

The HPU women moved up three spots to No. 15.

BYU-Hawai'i's women are 20-0 and have outscored opponents 162-6 this season, including wins over fifth-ranked West Florida and seventh-ranked Abilene Christian. Seasiders Elwen Li and Yuan Jia are ranked 3-4 nationally in singles and No. 1 in doubles. HPU's Zora Vickova is 12th.

In the West Region, BYUH is first, followed by UC San Diego and HPU. Hawai'i-Hilo is fifth and Chaminade ninth. The HPU men remain first in the region, followed by BYUH and Hilo.

All the Hawai'i teams play in the Pacific West Championships beginning tomorrow. This year's NCAA Division II Championship begins May 7 and 8, or 8 and 9, for men and women with first- and second-round play at campus sites. The final 16 men's and women's teams face off May 13 to 19 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

CHAMINADE FALLS, 6-1

Shalin Yamaguchi hit her fourth home run of the season, but it was not nearly enough as Sonoma State beat Chaminade, 6-1, yesterday in a game that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of rainy conditions at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Keli-Grace Kaowili-Saniatan had two hits for the Silverswords (7-32). Lindsay Emmel pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and Kayla Ledford had two hits and three RBIs for the Seawolves (26-19).
