Right-hander Ryan Shopshire pitched a three-hitter to help San Jose State beat the Hawai'i, 3-2, tonight to earn a split of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader before 3,352 at Les Murakami Stadium.
Hawai'i won the first game, 7-5.
Shopshire (2-1) allowed two runs and walked six with five strikeouts in six-plus innings for the Spartans (20-7 overall, 1-2 WAC). Trevor Gibson finished the last inning for his first save.
Matt Sisto (3-2) pitched the distance, allowing three runs and five hits for the Rainbows (18-10, 2-1).
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh and final scheduled inning, UH's Matt Roquemore led off by walking on four pitches. Pinch hitter Christian Johnson also walked on four pitches. Shopshire was lifted for Gibson. Both runners advanced on Greg Garcia's sacrifice. Ryan Morford's ground out to third scored Roquemore to make it 3-2 and sent Johnson to third. But Vinnie Catricala grounded out to second to end the game.
The Spartans scored two in the first off Sisto. Craig Hertler led off with a single to center and Kyle Bellows was hit by a pitch. Jason Martin reached first on shortstop Greg Garcia's fielding error that allowed Hertler to score and move Bellows to second. Bellows took third on a wild pitch and scored when Anthony Bona grounded to short for a double play. Corey Valine flied out to right to end the inning.
Hawai'i cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the second. Kolten Wong tripled to the right-field corner, but Landon Hernandez struck out. With the infield playing in, Jeffrey Van Doornum's sacrifice fly to center pulled UH to 2-1.
San Jose State got the run back in the third, when Tommy Gale led off with a triple to left-center and scored on Hertler's single to left to make it 3-1.
