In a showdown of the top softball teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 'Iolani got four RBIs from Marisa Terayama and Brittney Guro took care of the rest, hurling a two-hitter in a 6-0 victory over Pac-Five yesterday at Ala Wai field.

The Raiders, ranked third in The Advertiser's Top 10, cranked out 10 hits and committed no errors to improve to 4-0. The Wolfpack suffered their first loss to fall to 4-1.

"Brittney pitched an outstanding game and our defense played solid as usual," 'Iolani coach Lance Watanabe said. "And finally our bats woke up. Overall, it was a well-played game."

Guro was efficient — only getting to a three-ball count once — and allowed just three base runners. She finished with six strikeouts and retired 20 of the 23 batters she faced.

"I think I did OK," Guro said. "I just throw what (catcher) Kelli Ann (Lum) calls."

A first-inning hit batsman was quickly erased when Lum gunned her down attempting to steal second.

It wasn't until No. 8 batter Breeann Choy got on with a single in the sixth inning that Guro surrendered a hit. By that time, the Raiders led 6-0.

"I didn't think about that," Guro said of losing her no-hitter. "I just try to stay focused on throwing strikes."

Choy moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Guro retired the next two batters — including a strikeout to end the inning.

"She pitched very well; she got us the win," Terayama said. "She helped us out a lot today."

Terayama, the Raiders' second baseman, returned the favor, driving in two runs in a three-run second inning and stroking a two-run triple in the third that made the score 5-0.

"I just saw the pitch and saw that it was on the outside half of the plate and I wanted to go with it," Terayama said. "We've had a lot of hitting practice with our coaches lately and it helped us out today."

Left fielder and clean-up batter Kryn Masutani led off the second for the Raiders and got on after she was hit by a pitch. Fifth batter Shanna Tashiro singled on an 0-2 pitch to move Masutani over and Lum laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Terayama followed with her two-run single and later scored on a single by Lahela Usui. 'Iolani sent eight batters to the plate in the inning.

"That made it easier for me to know that I had that lead," Guro said.

Terayama agreed: "It took some pressure off of us and after that we were just having fun out there."

After Kim Souza singled to open the bottom of the third, Masutani followed with another single. Pac-Five pitcher Sheridan Mahelona retired the next two batters before surrendering the two-run triple to Terayama.

'Iolani added a run in the fifth inning when Masutani got on base for a third time with a one-out triple and scored on Lum's single with two outs to make it 6-0.

"I'm definitely happy we got this win," Terayama said. "This was an important game for us."

Samantha Ford had Pac-Five's other hit — a double in the top of the seventh. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Angie Yoshizu, but was stranded after Guro got a pop out to right field to end the game.
