'Swords prevail in PacWest volleyball

Trina Kauliakamoa had 19 kills and 22 digs as Chaminade beat Notre Dame de Namur, 25-15, 18-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at McCabe gym.
Samantha Miller added 14 kills and 15 digs, Pisila Tukia had 10 kills and 11 digs, Vanja Radanovic contributed 10 kills and five solo blocks, and Chauntelle Maduli chipped in 31 digs for the Silverswords (7-6 overall, 3-1 PacWest).
Lauren Quach had 14 kills and 31 digs, and Shauna Folan added 37 digs for the Argos (1-16, 0-2).

SLATER CLOSE TO NO. 9
Florida's Kelly Slater placed second in the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest yesterday, and is on the brink of clinching an unprecedented ninth world championship.
Adrian Buchan of Australia won the contest, edging Slater, 15.73-15.16, in the final at Hossegor, France.
"I can't believe it, to have Kelly in the final and to beat him, I am speechless," Buchan said. "He is my hero. I have watched him win five events this year — he has just been phenomenal."
Slater would have clinched the 2008 world championship if he won the contest.
There are still three more events remaining on the 2008 World Championship Tour, and Slater's lead in the ratings is virtually insurmountable.
Australia's Taj Burrow, who is ranked No. 2, would need to win the final three contests to even have a shot at catching Slater.
"It's frustrating though, to be so close — literally one score away from winning the title," Slater said. "I guess at this point I'm two heat wins from winning the title."
The next contest is the Billabong Pro at Mundaka, Spain, Sept. 29 through Oct. 12. Slater needs to reach the fourth round of that contest to clinch the world title.
The five Hawai'i surfers on the tour were eliminated from the Quiksilver Pro France earlier in the week. Kaua'i's Andy Irons is the top Hawai'i surfer at No. 13.
