Nanaikapono Elementary School has been awarded a $413,873 U.S. Department of Education grant for professional development programs and on-campus assistance.

The announcement came Tuesday through the office of Hawai'i Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono.

The money will primarily be used for the professional development of the school's teachers, in the form of workshops as well as advancement courses through the University of Hawai'i.

The grant also supports three on-campus staff positions that provide classroom and curriculum development support for the school's pre-K through sixth-grade classes.

The money was provided through the U.S. Department of Education's Education of Native Hawaiians Program.

BOOK SALE AIDS CHARTER SCHOOLS

The Alu Like Native Hawaiian Library will hold a book sale from Oct. 13 to 17 to benefit charter schools.

The fair will feature books from Kamehameha Publishing, Bess Press, Native Books and Scholastic.

All proceeds from the sale will go to charter schools, and shoppers can designate which charter school gets the funds. Cash or money orders will be accepted. The library is at 458 Keawe St.

DOLE RECEIPTS HELP AREA SCHOOLS

Families and friends can help support local schools when they visit Dole Plantation in October.

Participating schools can earn 5 percent of total receipts collected from qualifying purchases such as the Pineapple Express Train, Plantation Garden Tour, food and beverages, and store purchases.

Schools participating are Helemano, 'Iliahi, Ka'ala, Mililani Waena, Wahiawa, Waialua and Wheeler elementary schools. Kama'aina Kids-Mililani Tech Park and Wahiawa Baptist Preschool are also part of the program.

Participants must turn in all receipts to local schools by Nov. 15. Receipts must be from kama'aina or military purchases, which are discounted by 15 percent. Tourist receipts do not qualify. Merchandise sold through independent vendors do not qualify.

QUINTET CONCERT SET FOR OCT. 6

The Spring Wind Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College in Kane'ohe.

The group will feature music by Nina Rota, an Oscar winner for his music for "The Godfather"; Polish musician Wojciech Kilar, known for his film work with Roman Polanski; and William Grant Still, a leading 20th century African-American composer.

Quintet players are Susan McGinn, flute; J. Scott Janusch, oboe; Jim Moffitt, clarinet; Marsha Schweitzer, bassoon; and Jonathan Parrish, horn.

The concert repeats at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
