MADD Hawai'i will host its annual Candlelight Vigil and Law Enforcement Recognition Awards beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the MADD Victim Memorial along the Kaka'ako Waterfront Park Promenade.

Organizers said the vigil offers victims and the community an opportunity to remember loved ones killed and to honor those who have rebuilt their lives after serious injury caused by impaired driving and other violent crimes. Candles of remembrance will be lit, and a floral offering will be placed at the memorial.

Dozens of law enforcement officers from across the state will also be honored for their efforts to combat drunk driving and underage drinking.

MADD Hawai'i dedicated the MADD Victim Memorial toward the 'ewa end of the promenade in March 2003 to honor the victims and support the survivors of impaired driving crashes and other violent crimes in our community. Five years after its dedication, the memorial continues to serve as a place of reflection for the people of Hawai'i.

According to a news release, MADD Hawai'i has helped save thousands of lives during the past 24 years and worked to improve highway safety through educational programs, strengthening laws, partnering with law enforcement, and establishing programs for youth. When tragedy occurs, MADD is available to provide support to injured victims and the families of those killed in crashes.
