Lindy Aquino is the 2008 recipient of the Award for Faculty Service to the Community sponsored by the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award and given by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. The award recognizes an outstanding faculty member who has made significant contributions that strengthen the ties between the community and university.
Aquino has also received the 2008 Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of the Philippines Alumni Association. She is the only expatriate among the four recipients of this prestigious award.
University of Hawai'i planetary scientist Edward Scott has been awarded the 2008 Leonard Medal by the Meteoritical Society, an honor which recognizes outstanding contributions to the science of meteoritics and closely allied fields. Scott, a professor in the Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, studies meteorites, planetary science and cosmochemistry.
The Meteoritical Society is an international organization founded in 1933 to promote the study of extraterrestrial materials and planetary science. The Leonard Medal was established in 1962 and is named after Frederick C. Leonard, the first president of the society.
J. William "Bill" Potter has been appointed interim dean of liberal arts for Hawai'i Pacific University. Upon selection of a permanent dean, Potter will be assigned to the College of Liberal Arts as associate dean.
Potter has served in a variety of university positions since 1982, including sponsor of Alpha Chi, HPU's top honor society; dean of the Center for English Language Programs and first chair of the HPU Faculty Assembly.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial announced that Ronald Chavez, a recently retired Navy officer with experience in ship maintenance and repair, has been named the memorial's chief engineer and repair officer.
Chavez's responsibilities will include maintenance of the historic ship's hull and on-board mechanical and electrical systems, as well as planning and implementing of any industrial-level maintenance needed for preservation.
Chavez retired in January after 28 years in the Navy.
