Students from the Pacific Buddhist Academy and members of the Aiea Lions Club are scheduled to conduct a clean-up of the Japanese Peace Bell at Neal S. Blaisdell Park in Pearl City from 1 to 3 p.m. today.

The clean-up is in preparation for a ceremonial ringing of the bell on the morning of Peace Day, Sept. 21, as part of the "Bells for Peace" project.

The clean-up team plans to paint over the graffiti and shine the base of the bell an a plaque that describes its history.

The bell will be rung at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, to kick off Peace Day Hawaii 2008 events. Anyone who attends the ceremony will be able to ring the bell. Churches, temples and other places of worship will join together to ring their bells as well.

The day will include several free events at the Hawaii Convention Center in Waikiki as well. There will be a forum on school bullying at noon, talks on peace topics at 1 p.m., and a celebration ceremony at 3 p.m. that will include a candlelight vigil, a taiko performance, hula dancers and videos.
