Arnoult beaten in tennis at Beijing

Hawai'i's Beth Arnoult lost in the quarterfinals of the women's wheelchair tennis tournament at the Beijing Paralympics yesterday, but bounced back to advance to the semifinals in doubles.
Arnoult, a 42-year-old from Pa'ia, Maui, was seeded 20th in the singles competition. Jiske Griffeon beat Arnoult, 6-3, 6-0.
After a two-hour break, Arnoult took the court with partner Kaitlyn Verfuerth and beat Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the doubles semifinals.
Arnoult and Verfuerth are seeded fourth.

BARTELS ADVANCES IN RIO DE JANEIRO
Melanie Bartels of Wai'anae won two heats yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Girls Pro Rio contest.
The second and third rounds were run in 1- to 3-foot waves at Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Bartels was one of the standouts of the day, receiving scores of 15.75 (out of 20) in the second round, and then 13.9 in the third round.
She is scheduled to face Australia's Samantha Cornish in the quarterfinals.
Megan Abubo of Waialua was eliminated in the third round.

KALAIWAA'S LATE GOAL PROPELS SEA WARRIORS
Tami Kalaiwaa scored on a penalty kick with 34 seconds to play as host Hawai'i Pacific beat Academy of Art University (Calif.), 1-0, yesterday at Atherton Field.
The Sea Warriors (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak while the Urban Knights of San Francisco fell to 0-3-1.
Chelsie Sato made four saves for HPU in a game that saw few scoring chances.
The game appeared heading into overtime when HPU's Wendy Darling was kicked in the penalty area. Kalaiwaa was chosen to take the ensuing penalty kick and she calmly got the ball past goalie Shelby Magallon, who had made seven saves until relinquishing the game-winner.
