A fugitive from Utah was recaptured yesterday afternoon by the U.S. Marshals Service after he was inadvertently set free following an appearance at District Court in Honolulu.

Eric Ison Jones, 35, wanted in Utah for allegedly abusing his 1-year-old son in November 2006, was arrested on Liliha Street in Nu'uanu at about 5:30 p.m. by the U.S. Marshals Service Hawai'i Fugitive Task Force, according to state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy.

Jones was originally arrested at about 6 p.m. Wednesday by the task force at Pacific Marina Hotel near Honolulu Airport. Two deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service in Utah assisted.

An extradition hearing was scheduled for Monday.

Meanwhile, Jones was taken to District Court yesterday on a $100 local misdemeanor contempt warrant unrelated to the federal case. Afterward, instead of returning him to the police cellblock, state Department of Public Safety authorities released Jones from custody at 1:50 p.m.

McCoy explained that Jones was brought to the District Court cellblock yesterday at 8 a.m. Paperwork on the warrant was sent to a judge and was not returned to state sheriff's deputies at the court cellblock until 1:45 p.m.

McCoy said the returned paperwork indicated the judge had ordered a new court date, Sept. 18, for Jones' local case and ordered him released to appear on that date. Another order to return him to police custody was inadvertently missed.

In the Utah case, Jones is accused of abusing his son in November 2006. The child was found with third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body and remained hospitalized in critical condition for several months.
