Kahuku Medical Center will celebrate the completion of its new Plantation Days mural and honor members of the community at a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday at the hospital's emergency room parking lot.

Local artist Ron Artis interviewed longtime Kahuku resident and plantation worker Angel Ramos for inspiration for the mural that depicts a poignant scene from Kahuku's past at the turn of the 20th century and when the hospital first opened as a clinic, tending to the needs of the workers.

Artis offered to create the mural and has donated hours of his time to complete the work. The theme of the mural is transformation — giving significance to the sacrifices and hope of past generations.
