Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawai'i's last reigning monarch, was born 170 years ago this week, giving several Hawai'i Pono'i organizations the opportunity to honor her with a proper celebration tomorrow at 'Iolani Palace.

Last year, organizers said more than 5,000 people came out to pay tribute to the still-beloved queen, who suffered the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893.

The festivities start at 9 a.m. with live entertainment that includes music from Jerry Santos and Friends, Cool Breeze, Hoku Zuttermeister, Kaukahi and Kawika Trask and friends; a kahiko presentation by Vicky Holt Takamine, Mapuana de Silva, Leina'ala Kalama Heine and other kumu hula and their halau; and a historical play, "Ka Lei Maile Ali'i — The Queen's Women," at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A multidenominational prayer service at noon will feature kahu and choral groups from around the state.

Exhibits, displays, food booths and free tours will give attendees a taste of knowledge and culture and an opportunity to learn more about the Hawaiian monarchy and the bloodless coup in 1893, the queen's imprisonment within 'Iolani Palace and the annexation ceremony at the same site when an American flag replaced the Hawaiian one flying over the palace.
