Hundreds of pieces of exercise equipment, from commercial treadmills, elliptical machines and Stairmasters to squat racks and 45-pound plates, will be auctioned off tomorrow at the former Gold's Gym on South Street.
"If I had more time I'd refurbish some of the equipment and sell it at a higher price than the auction will probably bring," said Terry Brennan of Gym Doc. "But the equipment needs to go Saturday, so there's going to be some unbelievable deals."
Gold's Gym contacted Brennan to get rid of its equipment after the gym unexpectedly closed on Aug. 31. Its lease is up Sept. 14. About 1,500 active members have been transferred to nearby Powerhouse Gym, which also picked up some of the equipment. Brennan's job this week has been getting schools such as Moanalua and Kapolei high schools and various fitness clubs to buy the weights and other items. Some items that don't sell this weekend will be donated to schools and various outlets, Brennan said.
"If you bought all of this in here new you'd be looking at at least $750,000," Brennan said. "We're going to get a fraction of that at the auction."
Brennan pointed to a $3,000 leg press made of heavy steel and said it would most likely go for about $800 tomorrow.
Commercial-use treadmills like the 4500 Star Trac sell for about $5,000 new and are expected to fetch about $500 tomorrow.
Light fixtures, TVs, exercise balls and aerobics equipment, plus trophies and heavy duty equipment will be available.
There's even a cable machine that allows 12 people to work on it at once. Original cost: Over $10,000.
Auction hope: "At least $2,000 because the weights alone are worth that much," Brennan said. "The only thing thing with this is that you need room. It's 25 feet by 17 feet so you better have room if you buy it."
At least six elliptical machines, originally about $5,000 each, will be on sale and Brennan hopes to get at least $500 for each. Proceeds will go back to Gold's.
Brennan's Doc Gym business is responsible for maintenance, repair and upkeep for several gyms and schools around O'ahu. He said he'll work with customers who buy the equipment if needed, but he said all of it looks "very good," and "durable."
"These have been for commercial use," he said. "You're not going to get a better chance for cheaper, better equipment for your home gym than this."
The auction is open to the public. Schools, gyms and other area businesses may also be bidding, Brennan said.
