A 26-year-old Waimea man died yesterday from injuries he suffered when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway and Puako Beach Drive in South Kohala.

Warren W. Hollister was headed south on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway on a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle when a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck pulled out of Puako Beach Drive making a left turn onto the highway shortly before 6:10 p.m., police said.

The operator of the truck, a 58-year-old Waimea man, was not injured.

Hollister was wearing a helmet, and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. However, police said speed was a factor in the collision.

Police have opened initiated a negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death for Hollister.

Hollister's death was the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 26 at this time last year.
