MLB: Angels' Weaver hurts fingers in freak injury

By Mike DiGiovanna
Los Angeles Times

DETROIT — Baseball has a long history of freak injuries, from Sammy Sosa hurting his back because of a violent sneeze, to Steve Sparks dislocating his shoulder trying to rip a phone book in half, to Joel Zumaya developing inflammation in his wrist from playing Guitar Hero, to Hunter Pence suffering cuts from walking through a sliding glass door.

Add Jered Weaver to the list, but the Angels right-hander was lucky — his injury, while odd, does not appear to be serious.

Weaver sustained cuts on the middle and ring fingers of his pitching hand while pushing himself up off the Comerica Park dugout bench during Tuesday night's game against the Tigers.

The cuts, caused by a sharp piece of metal underneath the bench, were not deep enough to require stitches.

They did, however, force Manager Mike Scioscia to push back Weaver's next start, from Friday night at Chicago to Monday night at home against the Yankees. Dustin Moseley, recalled from triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday, will start against the White Sox on Friday.

"He shouldn't have any problem pitching on Monday," Scioscia said of Weaver, "but we want to make sure he heals up and throws a little bullpen session."

Moseley went 7-10 with a 6.94 earned-run average in 20 starts for triple-A Salt Lake and is 1-3 with a 7.15 ERA in eight games, six of them starts, for the Angels this season.
