BeachBoys top Sharks to tie for first in East
Advertiser Staff
Yonder Alonso had three hits and helped key a three-run rally in the seventh inning as the surging Waikiki BeachBoys beat the slumping Honolulu Sharks, 5-2, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.
Alonso and Buster Posey each hit RBI singles, and Roger Kieschnick doubled home a run in the seventh for the BeachBoys, who won their sixth in a row while handing the Sharks their sixth straight loss. The outcome left both teams tied atop the East Division standings with 13-11 records.
Damon Sublett hit a two-run homer to give Waikiki a 2-0 lead in the fifth, but Honolulu tied it in the bottom half on Sublett's error and Ryo Hijirisawa's sacrifice fly.
BeachBoys starter Andrew Brackman earned the victory, working six innings and allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out seven.
Sharks starter Satoshi Nagai, who did not figure in the decision, worked six innings and struck out 11.
Earlier, three pitchers teamed on a four-hitter and Kyle Martin hit a go-ahead three-run homer as the North Shore Honu beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 6-3.
Chris Hicks earned the win for the Honu (10-14) after pitching 2 1/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief.
Martin's league-leading fifth home run of the season — a prodigious blast that carried into the trees beyond the left-field fence — gave North Shore a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third.
Tyler Henson had given West Oahu (12-12) a 3-2 lead in the top of the third with a two-out, bases-clearing triple.
