Don't let TV switch disrupt your shows
By Jeff Chung
If you're a Korean drama fan and don't want your viewing interrupted, make sure your TV can receive digital by Jan. 15.
While television stations nationwide are going digital on Feb. 17, 2009, Hawai'i TV broadcasters will be making the transition from analog to digital transmission more than a month earlier on Jan. 15.
People often get confused about what Oceanic Cable's switch to digital means. If you're watching Oceanic Cable or other satellite services on a television set with a built-in DTV tuner, you're fine. However, if you're watching K-dramas on KBFD via rabbit-ear antennas on channel 32, you'll be affected by the change.
If you have an older TV set, or even a new one without a DTV tuner built in, then you'll have to buy a converter box or a new television set. Fortunately, a federal program is offering $40 coupons good toward new converter boxes that will allow you to receive a digital signal without having to replace your TV. You can request up to two by calling 888-DTV-2009 or visiting www.dtv2009.com.
Local TV stations are already transmitting analog and digital signals, so you can test your signal now instead of waiting until the last minute.
Why are local full-power stations going digital a month earlier than the nation? "Hawai'i's early transition was prompted by consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where they recommended that Hawai'i broadcasters deconstruct their present Maui analog facilities prior to mid-February to avoid the Hawaiian petrel breeding season in that area," said Mike Rosenberg, president and general manager of KITV.
Instead of having different counties in Hawai'i changing on different dates, TV stations agreed to all change simultaneously to simplify the already- confusing DTV transition.
