Leilehua cruises by Kaimuki, 38-7

WAHIAWA — No. 5 Leilehua scored early and in various ways to knock off Kaimuki, 38-7, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red quarterfinal at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

The Mules (8-1) will play East second seed Farrington (7-2) in one semifinal next Friday at Aloha Stadium, while the Bulldogs (5-5) are done for the season.

In an unusual move, Leilehua started taking a knee with about five minutes left in the game. It turned out to be its last series of the game.

"We were out of sub (substitute) running backs," Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda explained. "We didn't want any more guys to get hurt and there was no sense rubbing it in."

Andrew Manley completed 14 of 30 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns for the Mules. His only interception of the game was recycled into Kaimuki's only score of the game.

The Mules scored in all phases — offense, defense and special teams — in taking a commanding 28-7 lead into intermission. Newman's 90-yard return for a TD of the game's opening kickoff put the Mules ahead early.

Leilehua scored on its first offensive series with a 13-play, 58-yard drive that ended with Manley hitting Edieson Dumlao on a fade to make it 14-0 with 5:37 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs capitalized on an interception by Keola Kiko-Kahawai that was returned 12 yards to the Mules' 43, setting up a 24-yard TD pass from Nainoa Hiapo to Chris Fiamate to make it 14-7 with 7:45 left in the half.

Later in the quarter, a 50-yard punt by Newman pinned the Bulldogs to their 3. On third-and-11, defensive end Nate Hall knocked the ball out of Hiapo's hand and recovered the ball in the end zone for a TD to make it 21-7 with 1:35 left in the half.

"I just knocked the ball out of the quarterback's hand and the ball bounced back up to me," Hall said.

The Bulldogs muffed the ensuing squib kickoff that Marcus Breakfield recovered at the Kaimuki 29, setting up Manley's 15-yard TD pass to Cheves Aberilla Ramento with 52 seconds left to make it 28-7.

Kaipo Ke-a intercepted a Hiapo pass on the first play of the third quarter. The Mules quickly redeemed the turnover with a 19-yard TD pass from Manley to Dumlao to make it 35-7 with 7:59 left in the third quarter.

The Mules added a 31-yard field goal by Maika Kunioka with 2:35 left in the third quarter.
