With just two days to go, the ways Islanders can make a difference is growing.

Of the 14 projects listed on the online DAYtabank yesterday morning, Make a Difference Day options include cleaning up the beach, fixing neighborhood schools, sprucing up community buildings, creating a pretty garden, building a house and just making a connection.

You'll find Jack Kampfer, chairman of Malama O Wahiawa (an arm of the Wahiawa Community & Business Association), cleaning screens Saturday at Silvercrest senior living facility.

"Seniors are supposed to clean their own, but most aren't capable of doing that," said Kampfer, who will be on his fifth Make a Difference Day. "When my mother was alive, I'd go home and tighten screws, do all the things she couldn't do herself."

Their project draws about 220 people, part of the 18th annual nationwide effort, sponsored by USA Weekend, Points of Light and Hands On Network.

As a member of the Lion's Club who practices service year-round, Kampfer couldn't help but add: "Service shouldn't be a one-time thing, but if we can get you out one time, that's great!"
