Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai marks milestone
The Maui Okinawa Kenjin Kai will celebrate its 80th anniversary with an afternoon of Okinawan music and dance Nov. 9 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater.
Performers include Young Okinawans of Hawaii, who specialize in the shi-shi mai, or lion-dog dance; and Hawaii Taiko Kai, whose members practice the koten classical style of Okinawan drumming.
Also appearing will be Jimpu Kai USA Kin Ryosho Ryukyu Geino Kenkyusho, an O'ahu dance studio under the direction of Cheryl Yoshie Nakasone, who teaches at the University of Hawai'i; and Afusoryu Gensei Kai Hawaii Shibu, an O'ahu school teaching Okinawan sanshin (samisen), a three-stringed instrument.
The event starts at 2 p.m.
