After more than 90 minutes of near futility, University of Hawai'i senior forward Taryn Fukuroku broke through with a goal to give the Rainbow Wahine their first conference victory.

Fukuroku scored on an indirect free kick 2 minutes, 45 seconds into overtime as Hawai'i beat San Jose State, 2-1, last night in a Western Athletic Conference game at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

"This is huge," Fukuroku said. "This is just the beginning. It gives us momentum to the next four games."

A crowd of 827 watched the Rainbow Wahine improve to 5-5-4 overall and 1-1-1 in the WAC. The Spartans fell to 4-8-3 and 1-2-0.

Fukuroku, after midfielder Kristyn Shapka touched the ball because the kick was indirect and required two touches before a goal could count, shot a low ball under the wall of defenders and past goalkeeper Nina Butera from just outside the 18-yard box.

"I was trying to change it up," Fukuroku said. "I thought we were being a little predictable with high balls to Chelsea (Deptula). Low is always harder to stop."

Hawai'i has played in a school-record nine overtime games this season, adding an extra 119 minutes to its schedule.

"It's tiring; it's getting old really fast," Fukuroku said of playing overtime games. "Hopefully, the next four games we can finish in regulation and come out with wins."

Hawai'i outshot San Jose State, 22-4. Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said the game was identical to the team's two other WAC games — a 1-0 loss to Nevada and a 0-0 tie against Fresno State.

"We played in their half the entire game," Tenzing said. "It's difficult to score with the entire team in their half of the field."

The teams scored within minutes of each other in the second half, sending the game into overtime after 90 minutes of regulation.

Fukuroku fed Deptula on a corner kick to give the Rainbow Wahine the 1-0 advantage two minutes into the second half.

"Taryn had a near perfect ball and I was in the right place at the right time," said Deptula, who scored on a header.

The corner kick was set up by a 25-yard free kick by Fukuroku that floated into the box. Deptula headed the ball, but Butera stopped it with a one-handed diving save.

"We were hungry for goals," Deptula said. "The goalie came up big on their part. We just didn't let up."

The Spartans answered three minutes later on a goal by Emmy Belding on a pass from Amanda Martin. Martin's pass forced Hawai'i goalkeeper Kori Lu to come out and challenge, and Belding popped the ball over Lu's head.

Fukuroku nearly set up a go-ahead goal on another corner kick, but Tehane Higa's header bounced off the right post and the ensuing shot by Deptula was high in the 68th minute.

Higa had another shot on goal but again Butera dived to make the stop in the 82nd minute.

Lu made her own spectacular save on a one-on-one save off a shot by Michelle Haughey after a Spartans counterattack in the 84th minute.

The Spartans didn't cross midfield with a sustained, deliberate attack until well into the first half, but a free kick in the 23rd minute set up a point-blank shot in front of goal that Lu was able to scoop up.

Hawai'i, on the other hand, attacked in various ways, coming at the Spartans with crosses from both sides, combination plays up the middle and shots from the outside.

An already injury-filled Rainbow Wahine squad suffered a scare when all-WAC defender Nicole Mikula appeared to injure her right ankle in the 27th minute, but she shook it off and continued playing. All-WAC forward Ambree Ako, who has been hampered with a leg injury, sat out the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their home schedule with WAC games against Utah State Friday and Louisiana Tech Sunday. Both games are at 5 p.m. at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
