GREEN BAY, Wis. — Normally, it would be the sort of thing Peyton Manning loves: An opponent off to a shaky start and playing without two of its starting defensive backs.

But the Green Bay Packers and their patchwork secondary did more than keep Manning in check yesterday. Heck, they almost outscored him.

Safeties Nick Collins and Aaron Rouse both ran interceptions back for long touchdowns as Green Bay beat the Indianapolis Colts, 34-14, at Lambeau Field, regaining some of the swagger it lost during a recent losing streak.

"That's the way we play," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That's who we are."

Green Bay (4-3) has won two straight after snapping a three-game losing streak at Seattle last Sunday.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers gutted out his third straight game with a sprained right shoulder, going 21 for 28 for 186 yards and a touchdown despite 30-mph wind gusts.

Facing third-and-6 at the Packers 48 on the first drive of the second half, Manning's pass skimmed off Reggie Wayne's fingertips and landed in the hands of Collins, who rambled 62 yards for a touchdown.

"I think that changed the whole game," Collins said. "That was an opportunity for us to go up 24-7 and just take over the game."

With Indianapolis (3-3) driving in the fourth quarter, Rouse stepped in front of wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez to grab the ball, returning it 99 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach.

Manning finished 21 of 42 for 229 yards, plus the two interceptions.

"I can't really give you one, simple answer, try to summarize what's going on," Manning said. "We just need to play better. I need to play better and find a way to get into the end zone."

REDSKINS 14, BROWNS 11

LANDOVER, Md. — Clinton Portis broke a scoreless tie with a 3-yard run in the third quarter and rushed for 175 yards on 27 carries, and Santana Moss spun his way to an 18-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter for Washington (5-2).

The Browns nearly recovered from a 14-3 deficit, scoring on Joshua Cribbs' 1-yard catch and Braylon Edwards' 2-point conversion reception with 2:44 to play. Cleveland (2-4) then forced Washington to punt and drove to the Redskins 36 in the final minute, but Phil Dawson missed what would have been a career-long 54-yard field goal with 25 seconds to play.

"We might have underestimated the Redskins," Edwards said. "The defense played tremendous, and we've got to give them help."

The Redskins' Jason Campbell was 14 of 23 for 164 yards.

TEXANS 28, LIONS 21

HOUSTON — Owen Daniels scored two touchdowns, and rookie Steve Slaton and Ahman Green added a touchdown each as Houston (2-4) beat Detroit (0-6).

"I'm a little relieved, I guess," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "You've got to enjoy winning in this league. It's hard to win."

The Texans scored touchdowns on their first three possessions for the first time in team history.

They weren't quite as sharp in the second half, punting on four of five possessions, and were outscored 17-7, allowing the Lions to cut Houston's lead to a touchdown with about 4 minutes remaining.

The Texans held the ball until there were just 20 seconds to go and Detroit's last play ended in a fumble.

Houston receiver Andre Johnson had 11 catches for 141 yards for his third straight 100-yard game.
