BYUH tennis players withdraw from event

Brigham Young-Hawai'i tennis players Elwen Li and Jenny Chin withdrew from the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala. yesterday rather than be put in position of violating the school and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints policy.
Li and Chen, who won the NCAA II title Friday, were scheduled to play the junior college champions from Laredo Community College for the right to advance to today's Small College Super Bowl championship match. However, since The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints considers Sunday as a Holy Sabbath day, Li and Chen withdrew from the competition.
In the third-place singles match yesterday, Helena Van Eysendeyk of California University (Pa.) beat Li, 6-4, 7-6 (10).
In the men's singles match for third place, BYUH's Rong Ma beat Ales Svigelj of Barry University (Fla.), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

'BOWS ADVANCE
University of Hawai'i senior Sascha Heinemann and sophomore Dennis Lajola made the round of 16 at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West-South Region Championships yesterday in Malibu, Calif.
Heinemann, seeded No. 8 and ranked No. 53 in the ITA preseason rankings, routed Gautam Vaidyanathan of UC Irvine, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 32.
Lajola, seeded No. 13 and ranked No. 89, beat UCLA's Eugene Brazdil, 6-4, 6-2.
UH junior Andreas Weber, seeded No. 10 and ranked No. 76, lost to Moodi Kamel of Pepperdine, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
In doubles play, top seeds Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of USC beat No. 8 seeds Heinemann and Weber, 8-3.

BYUH, HILO PREVAIL
Agnes Tuilevuka had 17 kills as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Dixie State, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21, last night in a Pacific West Conference match.
Losaline Faka'osi added 10 kills and 14 digs for BYUH (12-5, 9-0). Katie Luna had 14 kills for Dixie (8-12, 4-6).
Elsewhere, Josimara Pinheiro had 16 kills and 12 digs as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23.
Mary Claire Bolo added 14 kills for Hilo (16-7, 6-4). Trina Kauliakamoa had 12 kills for Chaminade (9-11, 4-6).

LEBEN LOSES DECISION
Michael Bisping of England defeated Honolulu's Chris Leben in the main event of the UFC 89 mixed martial arts card yesterday at Birmingham, England.
Bisping was awarded a three-round unanimous decision in the non-title bout in the middleweight (185 pounds) division. Judges scored it 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Bisping (17-1) moved closer to a title bout against world champion Anderson Silva of Brazil.
Leben (18-5) is the head trainer at the Icon Sport gym in Niu Valley.

UH FINISHES 15TH
The University of Hawai'i women's team placed 15th in the invitational division of the Santa Clara Invitational yesterday in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Mariana Monasi placed 60th in the 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 45 seconds for the Rainbow Wahine, who had 397 points.
Long Beach State, led by Sarah Apgar's winning time of 17:14, won the 17-team competition with 88 points.
