HAWAI'I KAI — Nainoa Hiapo rushed for a touchdown and threw another to lift Kaimuki to a 21-13 win over Waipahu in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division Tournament.

A crowd of about 2,000 at Kaiser Stadium saw the Bulldogs (5-4) advance to next week's quarterfinal round, where they will meet defending Division I state champion Leilehua. The Marauders' season is over.

"What a game. Everybody definitely got their money's worth," Kaimuki coach Darren Johnson said. "Waipahu's a good team, they're well coached and they were a tough opponent."

Hiapo's 6-yard touchdown run opened the scoring and capped a nine-play, 65-yard opening drive for the Bulldogs. Nicholas Lino's extra point made it 7-0.

However, Waipahu's triple-option attack — not known as a quick-strike offense — did just that. Quarterback Josh Lacar took a quarterback keeper around the right end for a 52-yard touchdown run on the very next play. Neil Guiang tied it at 7 with his extra point.

The Marauders (5-4) — with the help of a muffed punt by Kaimuki — were able to put together a 15-play drive midway through the second quarter. However, after getting down to the Bulldogs' 3-yard line, Waipahu fumbled the exchange from center to quarterback on fourth-and-goal and the ball was turned over on downs.

"That bobble on the snap down by the goal line, that hurt us," Waipahu coach Sean Saturnio said. "It would have put us in a good situation going into the half."

Instead the teams went into the intermission tied at 7.

Lacar, on the final play of the first half, rolled out to his left and was hit while scrambling for extra yardage. On the play, he suffered a broken left wrist and did not return. Running back Troy Matautia ran the offense in his absence.

Kaimuki took a 14-7 lead late in the third quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Tevita Aholelei. Matautia was intercepted on Waipahu's ensuing drive by defensive back Isaac Lani. Hiapo capitalized on the turnover, finding Trendt Marsom on a fourth-and-goal play-action pass from the 2. The play ended a nine-play, 68-yard drive that made it 21-7 with 5:14 to play.

However, Matautia answered back with a 60-yard touchdown run to cut it to 21-13. The PAT was blocked.

Waipahu forced a punt with less than a minute to go, but the ball hit a Marauder on the play and Lani recovered for the Bulldogs, who took a knee on the final play.

"It was a well-fought game," Saturnio said. "Kaimuki played a good game, but we were still in there at the end. I love these guys."
