Olympics: Chinese champion in trouble after fracas

Associated Press

BEIJING — Olympic table tennis champion Wang Hao has been ordered to meet with his teammates and tell them about a confrontation he had with a parking attendant who reportedly caught him urinating outside a karaoke hall.

Wang, who won a team gold and individual silver at the Beijing Games, will have to speak to the Chinese national team after allegedly scuffling with the attendant in the karaoke hall's parking lot last Thursday.

Table tennis is often referred to as China's national past time and the country's top competitors are subject to enormous public scrutiny. In 2004, four Olympic hopefuls were dismissed for having romantic affairs that coaches complained were affecting their training for the Athens Games.

"He needs to examine himself in front of the team, talk about his feelings and the lessons he's learned and sound a warning for his other teammates," men's coach Liu Guanglie was quoted as saying in Wednesday's edition of Xiandai Jinbao, a newspaper published by the official Xinhua News Agency.

Wang was taken to a police station after he reportedly kicked the attendant, but was not charged and has denied striking the man or being drunk. However, he has apologized for verbally abusing him and reportedly paid him about $290 to settle the matter.

Media reports widely quoted Wang as shouting at the attendant: "I'm the world champion. I can hit you if I want."

However, Liu said he doubted the reports, saying such talk was out of character for the 25-year-old Olympian.

"Wang Hao is a star player and a role model for young people, but he's also a person and can make mistakes," Liu said.
