"Cape No. 7," a feature film from Taiwan by Wei Te-Sheng, today was awarded the Halekulani Golden Orchid Award in the 28th Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival, now under way.

The Halekulani Golden Award for Documentary was presented to "Noho Hewa: The Wrongful Occupation of Hawai'i," directed by Anne Keala Kelly, a Honolulu resident.

The laurels were presented at a midday reception at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel.

Jurors said the feature and documentary best expressed artistic and technical excellence while promoting cross-cultural understanding, furthering the aims of the Honolulu-based film festival, now in its 28th season.

Other honorees:

• Netpac Award: "Brutus — The Adventure," by Tara Illenberger. The fictionalized retelling of facts about the environmental degradation of Mindoro, Phillipines, was part of the festival's Green Screen showcase. Honorable mention: Vietnamese drama "The Little Heart," directed by Than Van Nguyen. The Netpac Award salutes works that promote Asian cinema and uncovers new talent.

• Film in Hawai'i Award: Joan Lander and Puhipau, for their significant contributions to the local film industry.

• Honolulu Magazine Award for Best Short Film: New Zealand film "Coffee and Allah," directed by Sima Urale. Honorable mention: the U.S.-filmed "Texas Girl," directed by Hyung Hyup Kim.

• Video-on-Demand Viewers Choice Award powered by Oceanic Time Warner Cable: "The Hollow," a University of Hawai'i Academy for Creative Media submission from director Dana Ledoux Miller.

The Audience Choice Award, given to the film voted by attendees as their favorite, will be announced later in the film festival.

Three more awards will be handed out at 10 a.m. Saturday at HIFF's closing day press conference at the Halekulani hotel:

• Achievement in Acting Award: Jung Woo-sung, in "The Good, the Bad, the Weird."

• Maverick Award: Kim Jee-woon, director of "The Good, the Bad, the Weird."

• City and County of Honolulu Vision in Film Award: Yang Qixiang, vice president of Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group.
