GOING VEGAS
Plaza moniker has place on Strip

By Anthony Curtis

The Las Vegas Plaza battle has been resolved. Or at least it should be. The owners of the Plaza in Downtown Las Vegas have been denied in a lawsuit to enjoin El-Ad Properties from using the "Plaza" name on its center-Strip casino-hotel project. A Las Vegas jury ruled that El-Ad had "senior trademark rights," based on its ownership of The Plaza hotel in New York City. Having secured local rights to the Plaza moniker, El-Ad is now citing 2012 as the completion date for its megaresort planned for the site of the former New Frontier.

CHER CANCELS: Cher has canceled all remaining dates of her show at Caesars' Colosseum through the end of the year. The official line is that it's due to ill health. It's still expected that Cher will return in 2009.

SPEED CLOSES: The Sahara's roller coaster, Speed, has been closed for the season, as has the Las Vegas Cyber Speedway ride. Interestingly, neither ride has been closed at any time (except for maintenance) in the past, and both would be slated for demolition if owners go forward with plans to build a new tower on the north side of the property.

HAWAIIAN POKE: A new store called Hawaiian Style Poke has opened just across the street from the east side of Chinatown Plaza, on Spring Mountain Road about two miles west of the Strip. More than a dozen versions of the indigenous raw-fish salad — spicy 'ahi, Korean-style tako, 'opihi — go for $10 to $11 per pound. The poke can be purchased in quarter-pound quantities, so you can try two or three kinds for less than $10 (and the transplanted-Hawaiian staff is happy to give you samples to taste). There's a different lineup every day (closed Sundays).

Q. Do any of the casinos run low-cost boxing cards the way they used to years ago at the Silver Nugget and the Showboat?

A. The Orleans runs periodic cards on Fridays with tickets in the $35 to $50 range. But North Las Vegas' Silver Nugget has recently initiated a boxing series called Tuesday Fight Nights. The cards run every week with tickets going for $20 to $30.
