WAIPAHU — Led by the stellar performances of quarterback Andrew Manley and receiver Edieson Dumlao, No. 4 Leilehua clinched the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West with a 27-21 win at Waipahu last night.

A crowd of about 2,200 at the Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex saw Manley complete 29 of his 43 pass attempts for 418 yards — including 13 passes for 192 yards to Dumlao — to lift the defending Division I state champion Mules to 7-1, 5-1 in the Red West. Waipahu, coming off an upset at Wai'anae last week, fell to 5-3, 3-3 in league play.

"This feel great," said Manley, who had three touchdown passes. "We won the Red (West) and now we're going to shoot for the OIAs and then, of course, for states."

Leilehua avoided a possible five-way tie for the Red West title with the victory. A loss would have put both teams along with Kapolei, Mililani and Wai'anae at 4-2.

Instead, the Mules — along with the second (Wai'anae) and third (Kapolei) seeds from the West — will have a first-round bye in next week's first round of the OIA Red Division Tournament.

Fourth-seeded Mililani will host East No. 5 Kailua and fifth-seeded Waipahu will visit East No. 4 Kaimuki.

After Waipahu took a 7-0 lead on a 7-yard touchdown run by Josh Lacar, Leilehua pulled closer on Manley's first scoring pass to Dumlao, a 21-yarder early in the second quarter.

The Mules missed the extra point, but Waipahu went three-and-out and Leilehua enjoyed a short field, starting its possession at the Marauders' 32.

Four plays later, Manley found Dumlao for a 15-yard touchdown for a 13-7 lead going into the half.

The Manley-to-Dumlao connection continued in the second half, as the pair hooked up for a 38-yard touchdown pass on the Mules' first third-quarter drive.

Dumlao beat the double-coverage and Manley threw it over-the-top and hit him in stride as he coasted to the end zone. Garrison Garma's extra point made it 20-7.

"Me and (Manley) had a good connection this game," said Dumlao. "The (Waipahu) corners were just bailing out, so we were just taking the underneath stuff."

Rico Newman added a score in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run.

However, the Marauders and Matautia — the state's leading rusher — would not go quietly.

Matautia, who briefly left the game in the third quarter, ran for 105 of his 160 rushing yards in the fourth quarter.

Following his 80-yard touchdown run to cut it to 27-14 with 9:13 left in the game, the Marauders got the ball back after a Leilehua punt.

Matautia carried five times on the ensuing eight-play drive, including the 5-yard touchdown run that cut the deficit to 27-21 with 5:39 remaining.

Waipahu regained possession when Newman fumbled and Johnny Manuma-Faamu recovered, but the drive ended with a fourth-down incompletion.
