Kailua resident Sherri first adopted Ubu, a 9-month-old black Labrador-pointer mix, from the Hawaiian Humane Society more than 10 years ago. (Doesn't her name sound familiar? Ubu's name comes from Ubu Productions, a television production company that ends its drama series with, "Sit Ubu sit!")

Sherri said, "Ubu's card (from the Humane Society) said she was not housebroken, not good with kids and had multiple issues. The list went on and on, but she turned out to be the most beautiful dog. Ever since we brought her home, she's never had an accident in the house, and she's great with children."

Two years later, Sherri adopted Pixie, a four-month-old papillon-mix. Pixie is now 8 years old. "Pixie is also a wonderful dog, just like Ubu," she says. "She's not as good with kids, but she doesn't bite at all. Both dogs were here first before I had my kids."

I asked Sherri what made her decide to adopt a pet from the Hawaiian Humane Society. She said, "We've always had good experiences with the Hawaiian Humane Society. It seems the Humane Society dogs are better than other dogs because they seem to know that you saved them."

I've heard that sentiment before from others who have rescued pets. Pets are grateful that you've given them a home.

Ubu and Pixie were abused before they came into Sherri's home. Ubu was afraid of certain men. Pixie was easily startled in general. Through love and time, both Ubu and Pixie are now happy, healthy, well-adjusted pets.

Besides having two human sisters, Rebecca and Rachel, these two dogs also share their home with a rabbit.
