The only time an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football team had beaten an ILH Division I opponent was in 2004 when 'Iolani upset Saint Louis.

History repeated itself last night.

No. 9 'Iolani held off No. 1 ranked Saint Louis, 35-30, at Aloha Stadium.

And this one went down to the wire.

'Iolani led 35-24 midway through the fourth period, but Saint Louis closed to 35-30, and drove to the 'Iolani 4 with under 30 seconds to play.

On fourth-and-goal, Saint Louis quarterback Jeremy Higgins was sacked at the 11, and the Raiders were able to run out the clock.

"Can't be any prouder than that," 'Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "We prepared hard for it.

"We only get the opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the state once and we wanted to make the most of the opportunity."

'Iolani went ahead on a 34-yard pass from Jarrett Arakawa to Keenan Hoohuli with 8:34 left in the game, which made it 28-24.

Arakawa, who was replaced by Kela Marciel to open the second half, faked a short pass into the flat and hit a wide-open Hoohuli down the seam.

"We knew we could play with them," Arakawa said. "We came in here with something to prove."

'Iolani forced a three-and-out on Saint Louis' next possession, and a bad snap in punt formation led to a fumble recovery in the end zone by the Raiders' Reuben Sele, which made it 35-24 with 6:44 remaining.

Marciel intercepted a pass on Saint Louis' next possession, but the Crusaders forced a punt and scored on a 1-yard run by Austin Wahinekona to make it 35-30 with 2:26 left. The PAT run failed.

'Iolani recovered Saint Louis' on-side kick and was able to run the clock down to 1:32 before punting.

The Crusaders took over at their 36 on their final drive and drove to the 'Iolani 4 before the 7-yard sack.

"The defense has been playing well all year," Look said. "They've been carrying us the whole season."

The first half was a shootout with five lead changes and one tie. When the dust settled Saint Louis led, 24-21.

The Crusaders outgained the Raiders 215 to 131 in total yards in the first half, but Saint Louis was hurt by a couple of unsuccessful on-side kicks and six 15-yard penalties.

'Iolani scored on the first possession of the game with a drive aided by two 15-yard defensive pass interference penalties.

Saint Louis' Wahinekona rushed 12 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

He scored on a 10-yard run to tie the score 7-7 with 7:37 left in the first quarter, and from 4 yards out with 1:41 left before halftime to put the Crusaders up 24-21.

The Crusaders' Higgins completed 7 of 13 passes for 80 yards and one touchdown — a 35-yarder to Billy Stutzmann to put the Crusaders ahead 17-14 on the first play of the second period.

'Iolani's Arakawa completed 11 of 23 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

He hooked up with Hoohuli, who was uncovered down the left sideline, on a 24-yard scoring pass to cap the first possession of the game.

Arakawa's 11-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Imada put the Raiders up 21-17 with 7:42 left before halftime. Imada caught the pass in the left flat, did a great job dodging a defender who was right on him and sprinted into the end zone.

'Iolani beat Saint Louis, 36-31, in 2004. The ILH implemented the two divisions in 2001.

KAMEHAMEHA SCORES EARLY, OFTEN IN 48-0 WIN

The Kamehameha football team simplified its schemes on both sides of the ball, and it made the Warriors simply unstoppable last night against Damien.

Kamehameha ended any suspense before halftime against Damien at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors scored touchdowns on their first six possessions to take a 41-0 lead with 4:55 left before halftime. They racked up 277 rushing yards and 150 through the air.

"We made adjustments in personnel," said Kamehameha coach David Stant. "We changed the play calling on offense to take advantage of (quarterback) Edmund (Kamano Jr.)."

Ryan Ho rushed nine times for 174 yards and three touchdowns in the first half for Kamehameha, which picked up its first ILH victory after losses to fellow Division I teams Saint Louis and Punahou.

Kamehameha (4-3, 1-2) found things much easier against the Division II Monarchs.

Ho scored on runs of 47, 58 and 16 yards in the first half, and from 1 yard in the third.

"They did well in practice," Ho said of his offensive line. "We have a new program in there. The game plan was straight blocking and the pass blocking was simpler."

Kamano Jr. completed 6 of 10 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns for Kamehameha. TC Campbell replaced him late in the first half, and was 4-of-4 for 52 yards and a touchdown on his two series. Campbell played the entire second half.

The Warriors' 10 completions in the first half went to 10 different receivers. Keanu Yoshida and Carl "Pii" Minns both caught touchdown passes.

The Warriors' defense held the Monarchs to minus-3 yards in the first half. Damien punted five times and turned it over once on a fumbled kickoff.

"On defense, we moved people around and went back to basics," Stant said.

Damien, which ran only 16 plays in the first half, picked up its initial first down on its final drive before halftime.

Kamehameha ran 38 plays in the first half with 13 going for 10 yards or more.

The 35-point mercy rule (running clock) was enforced at the beginning of the second half.

Ho finished with 12 carries for 187 yards and four touchdowns.

The farthest penetration for Damien (5-3, 2-3) was to the Warriors' 10 late in the game. The Monarchs eventually lost the ball on downs.
