Kamehameha girls volleyball players Alex Akana and Taylor Akana are not related.
And while they don't share the same blood lines, they share the ability to impact a volleyball match.
Alex Akana had four kills and three aces in the first set, and Taylor Akana had five kills in the second as host Kamehameha beat Word of Life, 25-17, 25-17, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu match last night at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.
"One of our best team performances all year," said Kamehameha coach Chris Blake.
Alex Akana, a senior, had three kills during a 6-0 run in the first set as Kamehameha, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, took a 10-5 lead. After a Word of Life sideout, she served three in a row, including two aces, as the Warriors went up 14-6.
"We had a lot of intensity," Alex Akana said. "We had a good practice yesterday and we carried it over into today."
Kamehameha's largest lead of the set was 17-7 after a kill by Whitney Viveiros, and Word of Life got within five twice.
The Warriors ended the set on a 4-0 run with Alex Akana serving, including a set-ending ace.
Kamehameha (12-1) led just 16-15 in the second set, but Koalaanuhea Matsuoka served four in a row to give the Warriors some breathing room.
"For us, our strength is our team," Blake said. "We know everyone will pull their weight."
Kamehameha turned to Taylor Akana, a junior, throughout the set, with her five kills coming without an error.
"The team did a great job having fire throughout the game," said Taylor Akana, who finished with eight kills.
Alex Akana had two kills, one ace and one block in the second set.
Crystal Powell, a senior, had five of her six kills in the first set for No. 8 Word of Life (9-4), which competes in Division II.
"All we wanted to do was get them out of their system," said Word of Life coach LeeAnn Satele. "We tried to play smart. Obviously, Kamehameha is a great team. They have great athletes, one through 12."
'IOLANI 2, MARYKNOLL 0
Chelsea Hardin had eight kills and two blocks, and I'ishah Keliikoa had key serving runs in both sets as the No. 2 Raiders routed the Spartans, 25-15, 25-11, in last night's first match at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.
Hardin had four kills in each set for 'Iolani, which finished with 24 kills and five hitting errors.
'Iolani (12-1) broke the first set open after Keliikoa served six in a row, including two aces, to extend the Raiders' lead to 20-9. Maryknoll (8-5) got as close as 21-14 after three consecutive Raiders' hitting errors, but 'Iolani closed with a 4-1 run, including Hardin's set-ending kill off the face of a Spartans' back-row player.
In the second set, Keliikoa served seven in a row, including two aces, as 'Iolani took a controlling 17-6 lead. Capri Tirrell had six kills for Maryknoll.
