Kotaka wins gold

Two Hawai'i athletes recently competed in the 19th WKF World Karate Championships in Tokyo, capturing the only medals the 21-member American squad won in the event.
More than 102 countries competed in the Nov. 15 championships.
George Kotaka (under 65 kilograms) captured the gold medal and Elisa Au (over 60-kilograms kumite) won a silver medal.
Kotaka, whose weight class included 62 competitors, also won gold at the 2002 WKF World Championships.
Au has won three golds at WKF Championships in 2002 and 2004.
In the final, Kotaka defeated Adam Kovacs of Hungary, 5-3, to capture the gold.
CROSS COUNTRY
WHITFORD PLACES 18TH
Brigham Young-Hawai'i senior Amanda Whitford finished 18th at yesterday's NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Slippery Rock, Pa.
Whitford completed the 6-kilometer race in 22 minutes, 16 seconds. Seattle Pacific's Jessica Pixler won in 20:59.
BASEBALL
UH CAMPS SCHEDULED
The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Baseball Winter Camps are set for next month.
Three different sessions cover various areas of the game. The camps are conducted by UH coach Mike Trapasso and his staff, as well as players and high school coaches.
The following sessions are available at $100 per three-hour session or $80 per session for two or more camps:
Dec. 20 to 21: Pitching or catching, 9 a.m. to noon; Hitting, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Dec. 27 to 28: Hitting, 9 a.m. to noon; Infielders, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Dec. 29 to 30: Hitting, 9 a.m. to noon.

BYUH WOMEN WIN
Latoya Wily had 28 points and 18 rebounds, and host Brigham Young-Hawai'i scored the game's final seven points to beat Oakland City (Ind.), 75-70, last night in a non-conference game at La'ie.
Mahina Gago added 15 points and Richelle Fenenbock 13 for the Seasiders (2-0). Jesse Oxley scored 13 points for the Lady Oaks (1-3).
HPU WOMEN PREVAIL
Maltresa Neely scored 25 points as Hawai'i Pacific beat Whitworth (Wash.), 91-71, last night in a non-conference game at McKinley High gym.
Paris Gravely added 16 points and Mana Hopkins 14 for the Sea Warriors (2-1). Cassie Pilkinton led Whitworth (1-2) with 18 points.
