Heavy rains cause 3 Oahu sewer manhole spills
Advertiser Staff
There have been at least three sewer manhole overflows because of heavy rains on O'ahu and the heavy rains have caused turbid runoff from Hanalei Bay to Nawiliwili on Kaua'i.
The Clean Water Branch said there was a 2,340-gallon sewer manhole overflow at 497 Luakini St. and a 255-gallon sewer manhole overflow at 2756 Dow St., both in Nu'uanu. The public is advised to stay out of Nu'uanu Stream, which flows into Honolulu Harbor.
The CWB said there was also a 4,125-gallon sewer manhole overflow because of heavy rains at the intersection of Hele Street and Keolu Drive on the Windward side. The public is advised to stay out of waters around the mouth of Kaelepulu Stream at Kailua Beach.
Warning signs are being posted at all three spills and water samples will be taken.
The CWB said the public is advised to stay out of all coastal waters affected by flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, chemicals and associated flood debris. If coastal waters are turbid and brown, stay out.
