Aleyse Evans scored 15 points, Cassady Moore added 14 and Renahy Young had 10 as Loyola Marymount beat Hawai'i, 63-47, in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational women's basketball tournament yesterday at UHH gym in Hilo.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Hawai'i's Leilani Galdones scored nine points and Sarah Ilic added seven. Dita Liepkalne had seven rebounds.

The Rainbow Wahine were 16 of 53 from the field, and committed 27 turnovers.

The Lions were 24 of 63 from the field, and had 17 turnovers.

In the earlier game, Naama Shafir made two free throws with four seconds left as Toledo beat Arizona, 64-63.

Hasheem Thabeet, a 7-foot-3 junior from Tanzania scored 23 points and had a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the host Huskies over the Catamounts in the season opener for both.

DeJuan Blair was overpowering inside with 17 points and 13 rebounds in slightly more than a half, and scored eight points during a 16-2 surge in the first 6 1/2 minutes as the Panthers routed the Knights to win their 12th consecutive season opener.

A.J. Abrams scored 21 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and the host Longhorns took a 29-18 halftime lead and were never threatened in cruising past the Hatters in the season opener for both teams.

Sylvester Seay, a transfer from Arizona State, scored 17 points in his debut, and the Bulldogs opened the second half with a 13-0 run to open a 50-31 lead the Hornets could not overcome in the season opener for both teams.

UTAH STATE 71, MSU-NORTHERN 50

Gary Wilkinson scored 24 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and the host Aggies raced to a 35-25 halftime lead, which grew to as many as 28 points in beating the Lights (6-1) in their season opener.

IDAHO 91, EVERGREEN STATE 69

Mac Hopson scored 19 points, Kashif Watson added 17, and the host Vandals, who led 44-38 at intermission, used a 23-10 run midway through the second half to pull away from the NAIA Geoducks (3-1) in their season opener.
