Heavy downpours soak downtown, Manoa

The National Weather Service is keeping a watchful eye on a string of heavy showers that have moved in over the downtown and Manoa areas earlier today, dumping large amounts of rain.
"There have been no reports of any flooding, but a couple of heavy downpours have moved through the Central Honolulu area," said Tom Birchard, a forecaster and staff meteorologist.
The rain triggered the "lowest threshold of alert" that occurs when rain gauges record a rate of one inch per hour or more, Birchard said.
"A gauge at Aloha Tower recorded in 15 minutes about .31 of an inch — that's a pretty good downpour," Birchard said.
A gauge in Manoa also recorded rain falling at about the inch-per-hour rate.
"There have been no reports of flooding, only ponding in some areas," Birchard said.
The morning showers have started to break up but are expected to move back in over the island periodically throughout the day due to the southerly winds, Birchard said.
There had been no police or fire calls as of 10 a.m. today directly related to the rain.
