SALT LAKE CITY — Jerry Sloan shook a few hands, then walked off the court with no hint of a smile or any recognition that he had just made history.

Reaching 1,000 wins as coach of the Jazz was much less important to Sloan than anyone else in the arena after Utah beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 104-97, last night. Sloan is the only coach in NBA history to win 1,000 games with one team — 1,094-717 overall with the Jazz and Chicago Bulls — and hasn't wanted a bit of hoopla for any of them.

But he couldn't quite escape it last night as Utah fans chanted "Jerry Sloan!" and "Jer-ry! Jer-ry!" in the final minute.

"I wished I could've crawled under the bleachers and got out of there a little quicker," Sloan said with a slight smile.

Sloan treated it much like he did when he won his 1,000th game overall as an NBA coach two years ago, thanking the fans who cheered him and then wanting to shift all talk to the game.

The Jazz improved to 5-0 for the third time in team history despite letting a 31-point lead slip to eight in the fourth quarter.

"It's fun to watch our players," Sloan said. "It's fun to watch them play well, and it's a little aggravating when they don't play as well as you'd like."

The Jazz improved to 1,000-596 since Sloan took over for Frank Layden almost 20 years ago.

"It's an amazing thing. A thousand — that's a huge number," said Kyle Korver, who scored 13 for the Jazz. "I'm sure someday he's going to be proud of it, but you know how he is. He's not going to show it."

Andrei Kirilenko had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Brevin Knight added 11 assists in his fifth game as Utah's backup point guard. The Jazz played again without Deron Williams, who is still recovering from spraining his left ankle late in the preseason.

Carlos Boozer had 21 points and nine rebounds, Mehmet Okur scored 16, and Ronnie Brewer added 11 points for the Jazz.

Kevin Durant scored 24 and Jeff Green had 22 points for the Thunder, who were swept by Utah last season when they were the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Jazz led 58-29 at halftime, but let the Thunder get back in the game with a poor second half.

CAVALIERS 111, PACERS 107

LeBron James scored 27 points and Anderson Varejao added a career-high 18, including 10 in the fourth quarter, as host Cleveland used a 40-point, fourth-quarter surge, including a 15-7 run to take the lead for good in turning back Indiana.

HAWKS 110, RAPTORS 92

Mike Bibby scored all of his 19 points in the first half, making four 3-pointers during an 18-4 run that broke open the game, and unbeaten Atlanta routed visiting Toronto to improve to 4-0, its best start since 1997, when its started 11-0.

BOBCATS 92, HORNETS 89

Jason Richardson and Raymond Felton scored 20 points apiece, and host Charlotte beat New Orleans, spoiling the return of Chris Paul, who grew up 90 minutes away and bought 500 tickets for friends and family.

KNICKS 114, WIZARDS 108

Jamal Crawford led a never-take-a-breath attack with 23 points, four teammates scored in double figures, and visiting New York used a 10-0 fourth-quarter run to open up a 112-103 lead to keep Washington winless.

ROCKETS 92, CLIPPERS 83

Ron Artest scored 23 points, reserve Carl Landry added six of his 20 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes, and visiting Houston, despite getting only two points from Tracy McGrady, sent Los Angeles to its sixth straight loss.

HEAT 99, SPURS 83

Tony Parker sprained his left ankle and could be out two weeks, and visiting Miami took advantage of his absence as Dwyane Wade had 33 points and 10 rebounds to beat San Antonio, which fell to 1-4, its worst start since 1996-97 — a miserable season that gave it the No. 1 pick and the right to draft Tim Duncan.

NETS 103, PISTONS 96

Devin Harris scored a career-high 38 points and host New Jersey rallied from a 14-point second-quarter deficit to beat Detroit, spoiling the Pistons debut of Allen Iverson, who had 24 points and six assists.

BULLS 100, SUNS 83

Reserve Ben Gordon scored 23 points, and rookie Derrick Rose had 18 points and six assists as host Chicago beat Phoenix, which played without Shaquille O'Neal, who got the night off as part of a plan to rest him periodically during the season.

CELTICS 101, BUCKS 89

Paul Pierce had 18 points and 10 rebounds and host Boston, which trailed by 11 in the first quarter, rallied and took the lead for good, 44-42, on Kevin Garnett's dunk with 4:13 left in the half to beat Milwaukee.

KINGS 121, TIMBERWOLVES 109

Kevin Martin had 26 points and six assists, Brad Miller contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds after missing the first five games for violating the NBA's drug policy program, and host Sacramento never trailed in rolling past Minnesota.

GRIZZLIES 109, WARRIORS 104

Hakeem Warrick had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Rudy Gay scored 23 points, and rookie O.J. Mayo added 20 points as visiting Memphis had its highest offensive output of the season to beat Golden State for the second time in five days.

NUGGETS 108, MAVERICKS 105

Chauncey Billups began his second stint in Denver with 15 points, three assists and three steals, including two down the stretch, and Carmelo Anthony scored 28, including four free throws in the final 12 seconds of its victory over visiting Dallas.
