Mission observes 120th anniversary

Next September, the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii will observe the 750th Shinran Shonin Memorial as well as the mission's 120th anniversary.
To kick it off, a proclamation ceremony will be held Dec. 21 with Bishop Thomas R. Okano delivering a special message from Koshin Ohtani, the head of the Jodo Shinshu Nishi Hongwanji sect. Afterward at the Betsuin Social Hall there will be a Q&A session and activities for children.
Also on the agenda: an Ohana Conference for Sept. 5 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with Ohtani and his wife, as well as a commemoration banquet. A memorial service for Shinran Shonin will be there Sept. 6, as well.

EMMY WINNER TO SPEAK, PERFORM
Faith Rivera, an Emmy winner and Kaua'i-born singer/songwriter, will be guest speaker and soloist at Windward Religious Science Church at the 11 a.m. service Nov. 16. She's also offering a vocal workshop at 12:30 p.m.
Rivera won a 2003 Emmy for outstanding original song featured on NBC's "Passions."

BOOK OF MORMON ON VIEW AT BYUH
The Brigham Young University Hawaii Archives has put a rare copy of the original 1855 Ka Buke a Moramona, the Hawaiian language translation of the Book of Mormon, on permanent display at the Laie Hawaii Temple Visitors Center.
Only 15 to 30 of 3,000 copies of Ka Buke a Moramona, translated by a missionary and a native Hawaiian from Maui, remain. The book is considered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as companion scripture to the Bible. The family of the late Ford Clark, originally from Farmington, Utah, donated the book to BYUH in 1978.
The center is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

NEW BISHOP, SR. PASTOR NAMED
Two faith organizations have chosen new leaders:
• The Rev. Shugen Komagata was appointed the new bishop of the Hawaii Soto Mission in a ceremony on Oct. 11 at the 'Aiea mission, conducted by Rev. Yoyu Miyashita of Japan. He takes over for retired Bishop Jiho Machiada and was the resident minister of Ryusenji Soto Mission in Wahiawa for 27 years. Komagata is also the father of the Rev. Shuji Komagata.
• The Rev. Mary Paik was chosen senior pastor at Nu'uanu Congregational Church, 2651 Pali Highway, and will start on the first Sunday of Advent, Nov. 30. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 1987, she has served as the English ministry pastor of a Korean congregation in Michigan, a presbytery staffer in California, and most recently as vice president for student affairs at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.
METHODIST CHURCH PLANS CELEBRATION
Kailua United Methodist Church celebrates 50 years at its location at 1110 Kailua Road with a special service on Sunday. The festive worship service begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes special music and a sign dance.
Afterward, at about 11 a.m., there will be free food and entertainment.
