'Invasion of the Reef Snatchers' family day today on Maui

Associated Press

As part of the festivities highlighting 2008 as the International Year of the Reef, an "Invasion of the Reef Snatchers" Family Fun Day will be held at Queen Kaahumanu Center on Maui from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

The celebration will feature crafts, games and entertainment focusing on reef-focused education and good stewardship of Maui's precious near-shore habitats both on land and in the sea.

Entertainment will be provided by Kalama Intermediate School students who will perform a rap about invasive algae, and by local musician Leokane Pryor.

The family fun day is hosted by the Hawai'i Coral Reef Initiative, in conjunction with the County of Maui's Office of the Mayor and Department of Environmental Management;

University of Hawai'i; DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources; and NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
