While no date has been set yet when preschoolers can return to Central Union Preschool & Kindergarten, volunteers worked over the weekend to build a fence around the fire-damaged buildings.

The fence is the first step in getting ready for future demolition of the burned-out buildings destroyed by a fire on Oct. 22.

The school still doesn't have a date set on when the 180 students can return to class, but when they do, a portion of the Parish Hall will be used for two classrooms and the library will be used for another class.

Eventually, the school plans to have families participate in painting a mural on the fence as a symbol of a coming together to create a new future.

"Safety is our No. 1 priority," preschool executive director Marie Hook said in a prepared statement. "There are a number of actions that must take place before we can allow the students to return to campus. We continue to work closely with the insurance company and necessary state and county agencies to ensure proper compliance as quickly as possible."

The buildings have been determined that they cannot be restored, with damage estimates totaling $100,000.
