Get some expert tips on music marketing

"MusicTech Hawaii 2008," an afternoon of informational talks and a reception on June 7 at the Outrigger Waikiki hotel, is aimed at recording acts, musicians and producers eager to explore ways to market their music to a wider audience.

The event, a project of The Recording Academy, Pacific Northwest Chapter, is intended to explore the marketing of music on the Web and developing marketing strategies in the digital world. Hawai'i members who are dues-paying voters in the Grammy Awards, the major project of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (also known as The Recording Academy), will be admitted free, with proof of membership. Admission for others is $50.

Participating experts will be Dave Allen, director, Insights & Digital Media at Nemo Design; Tom DeSavia, senior vice president, membership, at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; Erica Krusen, MusiCares West Coast director of Health and Human Services; Steve Mack, owner, LUX Media and Pacific Northwest chapter president; and Tim Quirk, vice president, music programming at Rhapsody.

Registration will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with an opening "Grammy 101" session at 12:30 p.m. "Building a Web Community for Your Music" will be from 1 to 2:15 p.m, and "Marketing Your Music on the Web" is from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.

A MusiCares reception from 4 to 6 p.m. will close the event.

The state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Creative Industries Division, the Outrigger Waikiki, ASCAP and MusiCares are joining with The Recording Academy to host MusicTech Hawaii.
