'Project Grad' grants deadline extended

The deadline for high schools to apply for "Project Grad" grants has been extended to June 30 from May 30.
"We've had 18 local high schools, a mix of small and large, public and private schools, already apply for 'Project Grad' grants this year. But we want to be sure that schools that may still be interested have a chance to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said in a released statement.
HPD began awarding grants in 1996.
"Project Grad" is an alcohol- and drug-free high school graduation event hosted by parents of graduating seniors. Parents typically join forces to raise funds to secure venues, entertainment and prizes. The actual location and activities are kept secret until the night of graduation.
"We use our Asset Forfeiture funds to reimburse the cost of transportation up to $1,000 for each participating school," said Honolulu Police Chief Boise Correa. "This is undoubtedly one of the best investments we as a police department make every year."
