Big Island police identified the man whose body was recovered today at Pe'epe'e falls/Boiling Pots lookout in the Kaumana district of Hilo as Vincent E. Scerbo, 27, of Puna.
A witness told Hawai'i County fire and police, which responded at 12:20 p.m., that the victim was attempting to scale up a wall near the waterfall and he fell backwards and hit his head on the rocks before sliding into the water. Police said the victim surfaced once then disappeared.
Three fire rescue divers dropped into the water from a helicopter and recovered the body.
Scerbo was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center at 1:30 p.m.
Police have classified the case as a coroner's inquest.
Scerbo is the second person in three days to die in a fall at a waterfall site. Andrew Wright, 28, of Hilo died Sunday in an 85-foot fall into a pond on Old Mamalahoa Highway in Onomea.
