Amber Kaufman's winning high jump at last weekend's Western Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships earned her a place at the Olympic Trials, which begin June 27 in Eugene, Ore.

Kaufman, a starting middle blocker for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, cleared 6 feet, 0.5 inches, or 1.84 meters, to win the WAC in her first postseason track appearance. Olympic Trials qualifying is 1.83 meters.

Kaufman's jump was a season-best and helped Hawai'i finish 1-2 in the event. Emily Sheppard was second with her own season best — 5-11 1/4.

Both have qualified for NCAA West Regionals next week in Northridge, Calif., along with eight of their teammates. Even if they don't finish top five there, Kaufman and Sheppard have a good chance of getting to the NCAA Outdoor Championships next month in Des Moines, Iowa, because of their ranking. Kaufman's jump is the third-best in Division I this year.

Rainbow Annett Wichmann, who became the first in history to win three straight WAC heptathlon championships last week, has already qualified for nationals.

UH hurdler Thalia Amanakis, who did not go to the WAC Championships because of an injured calf, will miss regionals.
