By Wayne Harada

Two popular Island singers-composers — Weldon Kekauoha and Cody Pueo Pata — have snapped two nominations apiece for the Haku Mele Award of the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts' Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. They also join four others for the Hawaiian Language Performance Awards, just announced.

Winners will be announced June 17.

Kekauoha's contenders are "He Mele No Kaua'i Kuapapa," which he co-composed with Ipolani Vaughan, and "Lei Ho'oheno," written by Kainani Kahauhale, on Kekauoha's "Ka Lehua 'Ula" CD.

Pata's creation, "Mili'opua," plus D. Pono Murray's "Ka Lehua a'o Waimea,"

which are on Pata's "He Aloha" disc.

The fifth nominee is Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett's mele, "Ola'a Beauty," featured on Hoku Zuttermeister's "'Aina Kupuna" debut album.

The Hawaiian Language nominees are:

• "Hi'iaka I Ka Poli O Pele," by Halau O Kekuhi.

• "Ka Lehua 'Ula," by Weldon Kekauoha.

• "Na Lani 'Eha," by Ku'uipo Kumukahi.

• "He Aloha," by Cody Pueo Pata.

• "Kukahi — Live in Concert," by Keali'i Reichel.

• "'Aina Kupuna," by Hoku Zuttermeister.

The Hawaiian language categories in the Hoku roster are selected by a panel of Hawaiian music and language experts, not the voting academy members.

These, and all other awards, will be unveiled in the June 17 Na Hoku evening, at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

Entertainment will be by nominees, including The Brothers Cazimero, John Cruz, Hoku Zuttermeister, Pilioha, Opihi Pickers, MighTy J, Darin Leong and Kamau.

Tickets: $125 to $200.

Reservations: 593-9424, by June 2.
